Students

Medical Student

  •  You are a student at a recognized university medical school, and you are looking for one of the following as part of your course:

- A practical attachment in the clinical area at Haydom (also called an internship or elective) or
- Descriptive research as required by your medical school, with an attachment at Haydom for gathering of information

HLH has an on-going programme accepting medical students for attachments of these types.

HLH has on-going arrangements with medical universities across the world.

If you are from a college with such an arrangement, please approach the tutor responsible at your college.

When deciding whether to apply, you may find the following information helpful:

  • We can take up to 4 students at any one time
  • The demand for places is particularly high between February and March, and July to September each year.
  • We give precedence to senior students, because the experience at Haydom is most useful if you are already in your clinical years of medical school.
  • It takes some time to orientate to Haydom activities, and so we prefer that you stay a minimum of 3 -4 weeks with us
  • As HLH is a general hospital, students visiting HLH are likely to gain experience in medical, surgical, paediatric and Obstetric activities.
  • There is also an active outreach programme in the reproductive and child health and HIV prevention departments, the Eye department and the alcohol addiction programme.

Application:
We recommend that you apply well in advance. The longer in advance the more likely it is we can offer you a place, or an alternative date.

Please apply by email in English as detailed above.

We request the following documents should accompany your application as email attachments, or follow soon after:

  •  Your CV
  •  A scanned copy of a letter from your medical school or university on headed notepaper, saying  1.-you are in good standing with them  2. - the work at Haydom will be regarded as part of your medical course (if you apply for this purpose). (We need to see the original by post or when you arrive)
  • A scanned copy of your passport picture and details page

Once we receive your application, we will give you a positive response as soon as possible, or provide you with alternative options for your consideration.

 Practical Points:

  • You should bring your own work clothes with you (for example, white coat, scrubs, or whatever you normally wear.)
  • You should bring your own stethoscope, and any other diagnostic equipment you wish to use (Ophthalmoscope, otoscope etc )
  • When making your application, please tell us the duration of your stay at Haydom, rather than how long you intend to stay in Tanzania. This helps us when fitting your allocation in with others.
  • You will usually have accommodation in the guesthouse in the hospital compound. Bed linen is provided. You may be required to share accommodation with others. For prices, look at the appropriate section.  Link to: Money and budgeting.
  • It is up to you to step forward and join in clinical and social activities. Students find this a positive way of getting involved
  • You should study the sections on health advice, transport to Haydom, etc.

 Nurse Student

  • You are a registered nurse student at a recognized college of nursing or university, and you are looking for an attachment at Haydom as part of your course:

HLH has on-going arrangements with a number of nursing schools in Norway.

If you are from a college with such an arrangement, please approach the tutor responsible at your college.

If you do not have such an arrangement, and wish to arrange a visit, please contact the Managing Medical Director (post@haydom.co.tz)  of the hospital with a copy to the Principal of the nursing school at HLH (haydomnursing@haydom.co.tz). If you are not from a collaborative institution you should be aware that you are visiting as a visitor to the hospital in general and not to the Haydom School of Nursing in particular.

Please note:

HLH takes third year students only.

All co-ordination of visits of nurse students from collaborating institutions is the responsibility of the Haydom School of Nursing. Other applications from nursing students will be handled individually by the hospital administration.
